Client:

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India, which first opened in 1994, has rapidly grown to become the largest exchange in the country. Its trading member network includes 2,100 broker offices across 270 cities with more than 4,000 online trading terminals.

Challenge:

"The consistent availability of online trading and financial data that Stratus has enabled us to deliver to India's financial markets clearly has contributed to our rapid expansion and success."
- Satish Naralkar
Senior Vice President
National Stock Exchange of India
The exchange runs its entire trading operation on Stratus fault-tolerant computers. The challenge is to provide continuous, high-performance trading services to NSE's members in the face of rapidly expanding transaction volumes. If the NSE does not meet its guarantee of two-second system response time, it loses the faith of its member community and could face large financial penalties.

Solution:

The NSE relies on a fault-tolerant Stratus system that is linked to thousands of brokers' Windows PCs and VSAT terminals. The Stratus systems manage the front-office trading applications using an in-memory database, connecting to several other servers running the back-office applications using Oracle® databases. NSE has set up a complete disaster recovery site in another city by replicating the entire production environment consisting of Stratus systems, back-office servers and networking equipment.

Result:

NSE's fault-tolerant Stratus server and the online, 24-hour-a-day nature of Stratus customer service ensure continuous availability of trading operations. In the last five years, average daily transaction volumes have increased from 2,000 to 350,000. As the NSE's trade volumes have grown, the exchange has upgraded from one Stratus model to the next without disruption to its trading operations.
