Full-Function Fault Tolerance

Maximum Uptime for Critical Applications

Fault tolerant computing is the ability to provide the world's most demanding workloads with 99.999 percent (five nines) system uptime or better, zero failover time, and no data loss. That's the official definition but Stratus customers describe it in more easily understood terms: Reliable. Worry-free. Mission-critical.

Stratus pioneered hardware fault tolerance and continues to perfect its implementation. Moreover, we are the first and only vendor to offer the highest levels of automatic uptime for Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and VMware vSphere operating environments deployed on Stratus servers. And, we continue to enhance, and support our flagship VOS and OpenVOS platforms.

Stratus fault-tolerant servers are engineered with fully redundant hardware, failsafe system software and built-in service capabilities that prevent downtime and data loss. But it doesn’t stop there. Our 24/7 worldwide service network gives you immediate access to the people and processes you need to sustain continuous uptime day in and day out, year after year. This ability to prevent failure and data loss from happening in the first place is what sets fault tolerance apart from clusters and other availability solutions that merely recover after a failure has occurred.

In the data center, at the departmental level and in the most demanding production and lights out environments Stratus fault-tolerant solutions enable your organization to:

  • Guarantee zero downtime and maximum performance for mission-critical applications
  • Prevent data loss and corruption – even data not yet written to disk is fully protected
  • Enable mission-critical virtualization for Tier-1 applications
  • Support real-time, high-volume workloads with ease
  • Accommodate network and transaction growth

Stratus support technology, built into our fault-tolerant hardware and software, automatically detects and resolves faults, and enables advanced online remote service. Fault-tolerant platforms from Stratus include:

  • ftServer systems  run Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and VMware vSphere operating environments. These systems leverage the latest Intel QuickPath architecture and quad-core and hex-core processors to deliver maximum power and performance for mission-critical environments and workloads.
  • V Series systems  run the Stratus OpenVOS operating system. These powerful platforms unite the stability of OpenVOS with the power and performance of leading-edge Intel multi-core processors and the strongest availability program in the industry.
  • Continuum systems combine symmetric multiprocessing technology with Stratus' fault-tolerant architecture and VOS operating system.
  • ftScalable storage is designed for the entry- to mid-level storage market. These open fault-tolerant platforms support ftServer systems and x86 servers from other suppliers, enabling common storage management and 24//7 services.

Independent testing: Virtualization software on fault-tolerant servers delivers unmatched performance, uptime
In a test environment that simulated a high-volume transaction processing system – an online DVD store – the Stratus ftServer 6300/NEC Express 5800/R320a provided “out of the box scalable database performance and fault tolerance to all guest virtual machines (VMs) by supporting multiple virtual CPUs (vCPUs) per VM.” It also continued processing transactions even when test engineers pulled an entire CPU enclosure out of the rack. Despite losing half of its physical CPUs, the server was back to pre-failure processing speed in less than 30 seconds.
